Students who complete this certificate program develop the skills to work with a teacher in a classroom environment. An educational assistant is trained in behavior management, professionalism, classroom management, and working with special needs children.  There is a total of 210 practicum hours in a classroom supervised by a trained educational assistant teacher in this certificate. Courses may be completed in one year or more if on a part-time basis. A minimum grade of C is required in all ECE, EDU, and HSV each courses and an overall certificate grade-point average of 2.00. An acceptable Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation (BCI&I) report is required in order to begin the practicum sequence. Various practicum sites have specific background check requirements. Individuals with a felony and/or domestic violence conviction may not be permitted to complete the practicums. Please contact the Education Department Chair for more information.

The Education department publishes a student handbook which defines specific departmental/program policies that are not explained in the general catalog. The specific policies as described in the department’s student handbook take precedence over any policies outlined in the College catalog. A copy of the handbook is available for review in the Education Department Chair. A minimum grade of C is required in all EDU and HSV classes in order to meet prerequisite and graduation requirements. Students who started under the old certificate may request appropriate “course substitutions” for the new requirements by contacting the Dean of Health Sciences.
